Readings

The selection of passages of the Bible for reading at church services is a complicated business.  We are guided by the Church of England’s Lectionary, itself derived from the ecumenical Revised Common Lectionary.  This is built around a three-year cycle of readings for the principal services, with each of the three Synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) leading for a year (John is used at many major festivals and also part of the year with Mark).  The lectionary also provides a New Testament and Old Testament lesson, which may be related to the Gospel, and a psalm.

This lectionary is designed for a major Communion service, where all three readings would be read.  Because we are a benefice of small rural churches, using a variety of services, it is necessary to adapt the Lectionary by selecting the most appropriate readings for particular services, and the policy is to encourage reading of and preaching on all parts of the Bible, particularly not neglecting the Old Testament.

In all churches members of the congregation from the yougest to the oldest are invited to read and also prepare and lead the intercessions.

If would like to know mor about future readings - usaully planned up to two months in advance please contact on of the churchwardens.  If you would be interested in reading a lesson please also contact the appropriate churchwarden.
